Southern Counties Youth Band in Concert

Friday 10th April saw a little piece of history being made in Bramley as the first residential course of the newly formed SCYB ended in fine style with a formal concert.

The band, conducted by Ian Porthouse, performed to a very appreciate 80-strong audience. Opening with the stylish (and conductor-less!) Blackbird Special, the band showed off the fruits of a week of hard work and some very talented soloists with a great variety of music including Matthew Hall’s beautiful ‘The Smile’ and challenging ‘Nightingale Dances’, the cornet section in fine voice for an unusual and very effective rendition of Himes’ ‘Amazing Grace’, and a slick performance of the ever popular ‘Gaelforce’ by Peter Graham.

Huge thanks for such a successful concert go to scaba president Norman Every, without whom none of this would have happened, our course leader Ian Porthouse and the team of tutors and volunteers who gave up their free time to work with the band; and of course to all the band members for working hard, playing hard, and proving so brilliantly that the future of banding in our area is in safe hands.
