Following another successful Easter course under the leadership of Ian Porthouse, the Southern Counties Youth Band is recruiting for the 2016/17 academic year.
The SCYB was set up by scaba to encourage young brass players to improve their playing ability and to have fun making music.
The band meets once a month on a Sunday. Our ‘year’ starts in September and ends with a residential course at Easter. We don’t meet in the summer term because of exams and holidays.
The players come from a big area – stretching from Oxfordshire and London down to the South coast. We rehearse near the centre of the area in Crawley which is easy for everyone to get to.
Rehearsals are from 10am-4pm where players have the opportunity to play a wide range of music under the direction of an excellent team of conductors and tutors.
There is a modest annual membership charge of just £15 per year, which helps to cover admin expenses, music and rehearsal venues. The optional residential course is £110 which includes 4 days/3 nights accommodation, all meals, the use of the venue’s excellent facilities (sports hall, swimming pool etc) and all tuition from our tutors and a top class musical director.
Membership of the band is open to anyone aged 11 to 18* who plays a brass band instrument to grade 5 standard. (*younger players may be considered depending on playing ability).
If you have any questions about the band please feel free to email our co-ordinator Norman at normanev@hotmail.co.uk. If you’re interested in joining us in September, an Information Pack and the Application Form are downloadable from these links or the Banding Resources page of this website.
